I
downloaded StockOpter® but can't find the file. Can you help?
To
find the file using the Windows Find utility:
- Click
Start on the Windows task bar (usually
at the bottom of your screen).
- Point
to Find and then click Files
and Folders. The Find All Files dialog
box displays.
- Type
SetupStockOpter in the Named drop down
box.
- Select
C:\ in the Look In: drop down box.
- Click
Find Now. A list of files displays.
- Double-click
SetupSO252.exe (or SetupSO252_Demo.exe, depending on which version
you downloaded) to launch the StockOpter® installation utility.

I
downloaded StockOpter® but when I tried to open it in Excel I got
an error message starting with "This file is not in a recognizable
format." What should I do now?
This
occurs when you try to open the SetupSO252.exe or SetupSO252_Demo.exe
file directly within Excel. These files enable you to install the
StockOpter® application, but because they are not the StockOpter®
application, they can't be opened directly within Excel.
To
install StockOpter®:
- In
Windows Explorer, open the folder in which you downloaded SetupSO252
or SetupSO252_Demo.
- Double-click
SetupSO252 or SetupSO252_Demo and follow the prompts to complete
the StockOpter® installation.
- Click
the StockOpter® icon on your Windows desktop, or click Start
on the Windows task bar, pointing to Programs,
and then click StockOpter25 and then click
StockOpter25 or StockOpter25
Demo. StockOpter® opens in Excel.

Can
I install StockOpter® on my network server?
StockOpter®
is designed to be installed and run from your local hard drive,
not from a network server. While it is technically possible to install
StockOpter® on a network server, StockOpter® will not run reliably
-- and may not run at all -- in such a configuration.

I'm
running Excel '97 and StockOpter® tells me I need the "SR-2 patch".
Do I really need this?
StockOpter®
will run without the patch, however, we urge you to obtain and install
it. If you run StockOpter® without installing the patch, all features
and functions will work and no error messages will be reported.
However, the numbers reported by StockOpter®, (or any other Excel
workbook) running under Excel '97 without the SR-2 patch may
be incorrect.
The
SR-2 patch is available through Microsoft's web site http://www.microsoft.com
or, if your version of Excel came pre-installed on your computer,
directly from your PC's manufacturer. A more specific page for SR-2
information may also be available at: http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/9798/sr2off97detail.aspx.
The
source of the problem is the "auto recalc" bug within Excel '97.
In certain situations, depending in part on the architecture of
the workbook and the interrelationships of formulas among cells,
there may be whole sections of a worksheet where formulas do not
recalculate as they should when values of cells feeding into these
sections change. This failure to recalculate is not visible to the
user in any way (for example, in #ERROR or #VALUE messages in the
affected cells), nor is there any action the user can take to force
an effective recalculation (for example, pressing F9 or Alt+F9
won't fix the problem). This bug has been fixed in the SR-2 patch,
along with a number of minor bugs.
Since
StockOpter® is highly flexible by design, and Net Worth Strategies
cannot predict what combination of ISOs, NQSOs, RSPs and Case sheets
you may be creating, we urge our Excel '97 users to install the
SR-2 patch so that they can have full confidence in the numbers
that Excel reports.

It
looks like some labels on the wizards are cutoff on my high-resolution
monitor.
On
monitors with resolutions above 1024x768, you should have the system
set to "small fonts."
To
check your monitor settings, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display
Properties>Settings and look at the field called "font size." Confirm
that it is set to "small fonts."
Back

Some
of the labels are hard to read.
Be
sure your system is set to high color (16-bit) or better.
To
check your monitor settings, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display
Properties>Settings and look at the field called "color palette."
Confirm that it is set to "High color (16-bit)." True color (24-bit)
or True color (32-bit) are also fine.

I
work for Merrill Lynch and while StockOpter® seems to install and
open just fine, I’m not seeing the StockOpter® menu items "SO Tools",
"SO Views" and "SO Help". What’s going on here?
There
is a known incompatibility between an in-house Merrill Lynch application
named "SSW" and StockOpter®. A related program "ESW" is also under
suspicion. You can check if you have these installed by looking
at the Excel menu bar. If you see "SSW" or "ESW" you have them installed
on your system. These two applications are set up to automatically
load whenever Excel opens. The solution is keep the applications
available, but not to automatically load them every time you open
Excel. Doing that’s an easy, three-step process:
- Close
all your open Excel sessions.
- Open
Windows Explorer and, assuming a standard
Excel installation, go the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart
- In
the folder, you’ll see a file named SSW32.XLA.
Move that file from that directory to anywhere else on your computer.
You might want to move the ESW32.XLA file
as well, if it is present.
Now
when you restart Excel you won’t see the "SSW" or "ESW" on your
menu system, and StockOpter® will work normally. If you need to run
the other applications, make sure StockOpter® is not open and then
do a "File / Open" within Excel and point to where you moved the
SSW32 or ESW32 files. While you won’t see a physical workbook open,
you should see the "SSW" or "ESW" appear on your menu bar and you’re
then ready to go!
